Correction of spectral curvature effects (smile) in Hyperion datasets by Use of derivative calculations and minimum noise fraction (MNF) transform

چکیده
Various pushbroom imaging spectroscopy systems experience low-frequency array effects that are often referred to as spectral curvature effect or smile/ frown and keystone interferences [1, 2]. The detector elements in a pushbroom system are arranged on a rectilinear grid, therefore dispersing the slit onto the straight rows of detector elements leads to spatial misalignment of the wavelength and bandwidth [3, 4]. Smile may also be a product of aberrations in the collimator and imaging optics [3]. Hyperion hyperspectral sensor on board the EarthObserving-1 (EO-1) spacecraft is a pushbroom imaging spectrometer [5-7]. Throughout the Hyperion operations, shifts of less than 1 nm have been observed in the SWIR wavelengths and 2.6 – 4.25 nm shifts in the VNIR detector wavelengths [8, 9]. Since the smile effect may render spectral absorption positions, the atmospheric correction may be insufficient, leading to a noisy reflectance product [9-11]; as a result, the thematic spectral based products may be erroneous [12] e.g., thematic misclassification of the data (Figure 1). Figure 1: Classification results for a VNIR Hyperion reflectance image of the research site. Figure1 presents Hyperion classification of rock types in the research site. Hyperion distinguished between most of the different rock types, excluding the right hand side of the image, for which only one class was assigned. Hyperion pre-launch smile estimates are inapplicable as the smile changes with time [8]. On the other hand, MNF-1 commonly used as a smile indicator does not

Role of smile correction in mineral detection on hyperion data
This work aims to extract the mineralogical constituents of the Lahroud Hyperion scene situated in the NW of Iran. Like the other push-broom sensors, Hyperion images suffer from spectral distortions, namely the smile effect. The corresponding spectral curvature is defined as an across-track wavelength shift from the nominal central wavelength, and alters the pixel spectra. The common “column me...
متن کاملA Maximum Noise Fraction Transform Based on a Sensor Noise Model for Hyperspectral Data
The maximum noise fraction (MNF) transform, which produces the improved order of components by signal to noise ratio (SNR), has been commonly used for spectral feature extraction from hyperspectral remote sensing data before image classification. When hyperspectral data contains a spectral distortion, also known as a “smile” property, the first component of the MNF, which should have high image...

متن کاملEffectiveness of spectral data reduction in detection of salt-affected soils in a small study area
Data reduction is used to aggregate or amalgamate the large data sets into smaller and manageable information pieces in order to fast and accurate classification of different attributes. However, excessive spatial or spectral data reduction may result in losing or masking important radiometric information. Therefore, we conducted this research to evaluate the effectiveness of the different...
متن کاملSpectral Mixture Analysis of EO-1 Hyperion Imagery focused on the Spatial-Temporal Variability of the Amazon Floodplain Multicomponental Waters
The Amazon floodplain water composition undergoes intensive variations along the year as a response to the annual flood pulse. The present study analyzes the spectral mixtures of the optically active substances (OAS) in the Amazon floodplain waters with spaceborne hyperspectral images. The test site was located upstream the confluence of Amazon (white water) and Tapajós (clear-water) rivers, wh...
